Challenge
To maximise the capacity of MAA’s existing Sun E3500 and E5000 servers that have limited scalability options while consolidate the servers into a SunFire 6800 server with two domains.
Solution
The server consolidation exercise saw Sun, together with its partner, CSA migrate huge amounts of data from the two existing Sun servers to the new SunFire 6800 server.
Results
The new Sun systems adopted by MAA Assurance now allows MAA’s IT department to run mission critical insurance applications, while at the same time connect the insurer’s 63 branches, 80 MAA-ATM machines and 550 top general insurance agents into a single seamless network. This is a significant move by MAA Assurance to continue using Sun’s systems in its daily operations, due to Sun’s reliable performance-based system coupled with a cost effective pricing solution.

CSC's Malaysian subsidiary, CSA recorded another milestone in the Financial Services Industry (FSI) when Malaysian Assurance Alliance Bhd (MAA Assurance) recently awarded us a RM2 million Sun server upgrade contract.
CSA, together with Sun Microsystems (M) consolidated two of MAA Assurance's existing Sun servers into a new, more powerful Sun server to support the increasing demands of the insurer's 1,000 users nationwide.
The consolidation exercise, according to Datuk Ramlan Abdul Rashid, Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer of MAA Assurance, forms part of a wider effort to improve MAA Assurance's IT capacity and performance.
“It will directly benefit our customers and internal users, while helping MAA Assurance fulfil its role as a leading insurance provider,” he said.
Huge amounts of data were migrated from the two existing Sun servers to the new SunFire 6800 server when the project began in June.
With the new systems in place, MAA Assurance can now run mission critical insurance applications, while at the same time connect the insurer's 76-branches, 80 MAA ATM machines and 300 top general insurance agents into a single seamless network.
Its systems administrators are also able to access and control the company's enterprise infrastructure from virtually anywhere on the network or via the Internet by subscribing to Sun's Management Center.
Another interesting aspect of the consolidation exercise is MAA Assurance's decision to be one of Malaysia's pioneer insurance companies to deploy Utility Computing, where its IT systems will utilise a pay-as-you-grow service akin to electricity. Moreover, storage and network capacity can be turned up or down at the touch of a button or respond automatically to changing demands.
With the upgrade and adoption of Utility Computing, MAA Assurance is now experiencing better customer service, a more simplified network computing system, a reduction of its IT costs as well as a higher return-on-investment (ROI).
CSA will also provide MAA Assurance maintenance services of the systems for the next 3 years via its IT services provider, MAAGNET Systems Sdn Bhd.
